Yesterday night, thanks to Angela, I got to watch five hours of
Pride & Prejudice. I am not kidding when I say five hours; the first disc is 2:35 hours long and the second disc is 2:26 hours long. That's five hours and one minute long! Usually I can't watch two hour long movies in one sitting, yet I somehow managed to watch all five hours last night. Granted, I gave myself short breaks every hour or so...but five hours is still a long time! I'm still wondering how they stretched a 367 page book into a five hour movie, but that's besides the point.
You may be thinking: "Jenna, you're dumb. Who spends their Saturday night sitting on the couch watching Pride & Prejudice? It's not even the new one, it's the BBC mini-series. You're a loser." To this I respond, you're the loser! You probably spent the night watching Hannah Montana reruns. No, you probably didn't... I take that back. I'm sorry for accusing you.
Let's get to the point of this little blog post. I freakin' loved P&P. No joke. It was awesome, and not just because Mr. Darcy was played by Colin Firth. That should make english class awkward on Monday. I'll walk in and be like "Oh hey, Mr. Darcy. How was your weekend? Read any good books? Intimidate any small childr.. Oh wait, it's just you Robby D." I love Colin's variety of facial expressions in this movie. Oh wait, there were only two: stern and serious, and that subtle smile that implies he is in love. As much as I fangirled over Darcy and wished I was Elizabeth, I think he would intimidate the crap out of me. He might even make me cry.
Okay, so here are some random thoughts that I had while watching:
The mother...Oh my god. How annoying. She made me laugh so much, though, that I couldn't even hate her. Her voice was just so annoying and whenever she opened her mouth my ears hurt. It's funny how all the crazies always have voices like that. Like what if someone was crazy and talked like that, but then they became normal. Would their voice magically change and sound like a normal person? I didn't hate her, but it did annoy me when all she cared about was marrying her daughters off into wealth. And if she was my mom, I'd be so embarrassed to go out in public with her. It would be like, "Mom.. MOM. Stop that....No, please stop trying to set me up with various guys... Mooommmmm. Come onnnn." But anyway, she was just comic relief so what else can you expect? Their dad was the best. He was such a chill guy and when he was talking to Elizabeth about marrying Mr. Collins he said, "Your mother will not talk to you if you don't marry him. I won't talk to you if you do." That was really cool, especially since the mother was standing right there and proceeded to have a spaz attack. His facial hair looked fun too.
I love how Mr. Darcy breathed so hard after he first told Elizabeth he loved her. I'm still not sure if this is because he had just run a freaking marathon beforehand, so I'll give him some leeway. But seriously, it was like telling her he loved her was the most physically difficult thing he had to do all day. As weird as that was, I like it. Also, whenever Darcy talked about his feeling towards Lizzie with her and then left, she would just take in this really deep breath like she was going to cry. Like maybe if you had said what's on your mind before he left, you wouldn't be so exhausted. And then you'd believe she loved him cause it's written all over her face, but then in the next scene she would be all angry and complain about how rude he was and how much she didn't like him. Don't get me wrong, I love Elizabeth, but she needs to make up her mind.
Now to talk about the people I hated. Ugh, LYDIA. So annoying. First of all, she completely screws her family over and makes Elizabeth leave Darcy's house to return home. Then we find out she eloped so she could do something none of her sisters have done. I guess it never occurred to her that her sisters aren't whores. And when she is staying with Wickham, she doesn't even realize that he isn't bothering to give her the time of day. She's just like "oh, when are we going to the theater together? I want everyone to see us together." Shut up, Lydia. And it amazes me that she doesn't realize that he doesn't care about her...at all. Once they get married and return home, she get more annoying. When Wickham is riding his horse and she's with her sisters, she's all, "Oh, look at my husband! Isn't he perfect? Lizzie aren't you jealous of our marriage? OH, we're just perfect together." Shut up, Lydia.
Lady Catherine de Bourgh. I don't care how wealthy she is, she's rude and inconsiderate...and kflfjlewkrdjwe. I hate her. When you're a guest in someone's house, you don't tell them how small the house is, or how big the windows are and how it must be impossible to sit in that room during the summer because of the heat, or try to tell someone who to be in love with or marry, or yell at them for putting you in your place. When she was in the woods with Elizabeth, I came super close to throwing something at my TV. The fact that she was ugly didn't help her case. Her hair really bothered me too. It was hard to look at it. Looks aside, I hate her.
Mr. Collins also rubbed me the wrong way, figuratively, and probably would literally if he was real because he's that much of a creeper. He reminded me of Wormtail from HP, only not so evil. He was their freaking cousin and he wanted to dance with all the Bennet sisters and asked Elizabeth to marry her. Creep. And I don't recall them ever talking about how Collins would inherit the estate since the Bennet's had no son? I mean, a five-hour movie out of a 367 page book and you'd think they wouldn't cut anything out...
Mary also bothered me. But I didn't hate her, 'cause you know, she didn't really do anything wrong, she was just boring.
Was it just me, or did Bingley's sister (the one with the black hair, I think it was Caroline?) look like Bob Saget in that episode of Full House when Danny and Joey dress up in drag and get arrested? She also looked like Flopsy from M&MD. And Elizabeth randomely turned into Anastasia halfway through the movie and was like "JUST KIDDING, my hair isn't short. It's really long in the back." And there were two scenes on the second disc where she looked Asian.
Non-Pride & Prejudice things:
My iTunes decided to be stupid and told me I needed to authorize my computer, but then wouldn't let me, even though I had only authorized 4/5 computers. And it wouldn't put my new songs on my iPod so I erased everything and put stuff back on, which deleted some of my Mika songs, which I had got from a friend. Eventually I just deauthorized, then authorized and it worked, but I want my Mika back!
Wizards, Witches, and Warriors is officially my favorite class. There's five other people in that class and they're all my friends so that's cool. But that's not the awesome part. The awesome part is that I get to be a nerd, and get a grade for it. Talking about fantasy all period is the perfect way to end the day. Last week I was having a really bad week, but that class put me in such a good mood that I was just like "Yo, Angela. Let's have a slumbie tonight." So we had a slumbie and all was well. And I stole all of her Narnia books, Pride & Prejudice, V for Vendetta, A Night at the Roxbury, and Alien. And we read a book about film for at least an hour. I am now informed of all films from 1900-1990. And I became a total geek when we got to the 40s and 50s cause you know, James Dean, Humphrey Bogart, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, and Patrick Stewart...Uh-mazing.
